Olivia loved helping me decorate our Christmas tree this year, so when I saw the felt Christmas tree idea going around on Facebook and Pinterest, I knew I had to try it. I also saw that Target was selling an inexpensive version of this, but I am very picky about colors. I don’t like primary colors, but love bright and cooler hues. Instead of the traditional red and green, I prefer fuschia and lime green. I knew that the only way for me to get the style and colors I wanted was to make it myself. So that’s what I set out to do.
I started with the fabric for the tree. I went online and started doing my research and realized quickly that there is a lot of felt out there…but through my browsing, I found a glitter felt. I’m a sparkly kind of girl, so this seemed perfect. The sparkle of the glitter also gave the hint of Christmas tree lights, which seemed all the more perfect. This was a quick decision and I bought 1 yard of this at Joann’s Fabric.
While on a Target run, I randomly came across a large stack of beautiful felt colors cut into small 6″ x 6″ squares. It had the whole spectrum of the rainbow and plenty of the vibrant colors that I gravitate to, so I grabbed this for the ornaments and presents.
I started by using tailoring chalk to free hand one side of the tree. When I had the shape that I liked, I folded the fabric in half and cut out the shape…that way I could ensure both sides of the tree were symmetrical. My tree measures about 33″ wide and 36″ tall. I decided to keep the bottom of the tree flat and not add a trunk. That way I could add presents to the bottom of the tree and they would have fabric to stick to.
For the star, I found a pattern online for a 5″ height. I used a simple 2-1/2″ circle for the ornaments. I might add more shapes and designs for the ornaments in the future, but for now I started simply.
Lastly, to give the tree that holiday spirit I added felt presents to the bottom. I ended up gluing the star and the presents to the tree, but all the ornaments can be arranged as my daughter pleases. Felt sticks to felt, so once the shapes are cut out, they are ready to play with. It’s been a fun holiday activity she can participate in at home.
